When I was in secondary school we were taught about drama and that there were basically three types;
The Comedy
The Tragedy and
The Tragicomedy
Basically the Comedy always had a happy ending like Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ or ‘Much Ado About Nothing’. The tragedy was…you know…Tragic. So there you have your ‘King Lear’, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and ‘Macbeth’ (That was one dark story).
The Tragicomedy was and is basically a mix of the first two, intertwining tragic incidents with happier periods and usually the ending is happy. The Merchant of Venice is a good example of this.
Well, so it feels for Arsenal right now, a tragicomedy; Olivier Giroud scores his first goal in a century/Per Mertesacker gets injured. Theo Walcott actually plays a game in which he’s effective/Gabriel gets injured. We win by a thumping scoreline with great games for Elneny, Iwobi and Ospina/Ramsey gets injured.
So basically, it was like for every good thing that happened in that game, something bad also happened. We find ourselves in a situation right now that isn’t very ideal. For all of Ramsey’s bad form and Gabriel’s shakiness, they were still first team players that offered something to the team, now we face a prospect of having Mertesacker (if fit) and Calum Chambers taking on Lionel Messi and co.
Yes, it’s that dire.
We have an idea about the seriousness of their injuries so that remains to be seen. The win means we’re in the quarter finals of the FA cup again with a game against Watford coming up at the weekend and if we win that, we’re through to the semi finals which is very nice indeed.
What I enjoyed about the win mostly is the confidence that seems to be slowly seeping into these players. When players like Alexis, Giroud and Walcott score, you begin to hope it’s the spark of something for them. Alexis and Giroud have proven themselves as somewhat cyclic goalscorers. Long stretches of barrenness usually makes way for a burst of goals. It is my hope that this is one of those times.
Joel Campbell did really well, I’m liking Elneny more and more. Iwobi is just amazing and we even got to see The Jeff. So all in all a fairly good night. It is hoped that we can carry this form into the Premier League. I do fear for the Barcelona match and hope it isn’t a step backwards. The loss to them is what sort of brought about the miserable run of five games without a win and another defeat to them (let’s not kid ourselves that’s the likely outcome) I can only hope doesn’t lead to another slump from us.
The Premier League has more or less gotten away from us, but it won’t hurt to keep pushing…let’s see what happens, you just never know.
So kudos to everyone, wish the lads that got injured a speedy recovery (we’ll probably learn that all three of them can never ever touch a football again) and hope for the best this weekend.
