So I feel a little disgruntled this morning.
Like I was disappointed by the performance of the team yesterday, but a little mollified by the result. We could certainly have done better but it could also have gone way south. We played a Tottenham side that has only lost once this season and that was on the first day of the season. They have won or drawn the others and we were seriously depleted. We looked like we were being held together by masking tape or something.
Man City had just drawn against Aston Villa. We would have wanted to get to the top of the table, but a combination of good play from Tottenham, bad play from us, injuries and we came away with a draw. So we head into the interlull still level on points with Manchester City , joint top of the table (Or second by goal difference take your pick) and that’s kinda a good thing.
I’m usually the optimist, so there were a lot of positives for me to take from this.
The first was Debuchy. Yes…I said it, I went there. He wasn’t world class or anything, neither was he our best player, but je did quite well, he wasn’t quite the liability he has been in the last two games he’s been in. There’s a statistic from this season that says we haven’t won any game that debuchy has been part of this season and the same was still true yesterday, but it was a much better performance from the Frenchman.
Next up is the interlull. I have never been so happy to see an interlull in my life, but I am totally stoked for this one. We have been so depleted a lot of the players need a rest and with the internationals a couple of them will get it (Ozil, Mertesacker, Monreal, Coquelin etc) and that would be a boost. Also we have the promise of having a couple of players back after the interlull and that’s insanely good news. I believe we should have Bellerin, Ramsey and Oxlade Chamberlain back by the end of the interlull and that would do us a world of good.
Cech was also a huge positive yesterday. He conceded yes, but you can hardly blame him for the goal and he kept us in the game sometimes. There was a chance for Kane and a save from Eriksen and he was able to keep us in it long enough for us to equalize. That’s what a top class goalkeeper brings to the table and i’m glad we have him. He makes one point three and zero points one.
Then there was Mesut.
He’s amazing. He’s really coming into his own this season isn’t he? I mean I think he’s been good ever since he got here, but he wasn’t as good as we knew he could be, but this season he has been peerless in his contribution to the team. He is without a shadow of doubt the best playmaker on the planet and you could see it on the pitch. He laid on another assist yesterday, his 6th in as many games setting a new record. He’s awesome and as he’s getting a rest for the interlull he should be fresh once we’re ready to kick off again. I’m glad he’s in such good form and long may it continue.
Finally, I think the whole team deserves credit. This isn’t the result we desired but with the state of the team and the state of the game, it was remarkable to come back and even chase the game with the intent of winning. We could have nicked it if Giroud had taken one of his chances. He’s been pretty great so far and I don’t think he was bad yesterday, but he could and should have done better with at least one of the chances fine margins and all.
This is a game that former versions of this Arsenal team could have so easily lost and yet we were able to dig deep and found a goal and rescued a point. We have a couple of ‘soft’ games (No game is soft in the premier league) after the interlull before we face City and if we can keep up the pace till then and get some luck on the injury front, things could be quite interesting, but more on that later.
