Clichy sends a perfectly weighted pass from the left side of our half; just behind the half way line, Eduardo receives the ball in a universe sized amount of space, turns around and makes for the 18 yard box.
He calmly passes the ball to the awaiting Adebayor and skips over the onrushing leg of a Birmingham City player called Taylor. Having drawn the second Birmingham City centre back out of position, he makes a run into that space. Fabregas who is ever watchful of spaces and players making runs, instantly spots Eduardo making calm strides into a good goal scoring opportunity, he calls for the ball and Adebayor passes the ball to him, he doesn’t even take a touch but passes the ball straight onto the path of Eduardo who takes the ball expertly and runs at the onrushing opposition keeper, and slots the ball calmly in-between his legs.
GOAL! EDUARDO has done it again!!! THIS GUY IS UNSTOPPABLE!!! BEST STRIKER IN THE LEAGUE!!!! Arsenal are 1-0 up and the League is getting closer to their grasp.
The enigma that is Eduardo Da Silva signed for Arsenal on the 2nd of July 2007 for a regular fee of £7.5m from Dynamo Zagreb.
Having scored 73 goals in 98 apps for Dynamo, I was beyond excited to see what he could do for Arsenal. As many of us can remember, it didn’t take Dudu long to find the back of the net, and in outstanding fashion, he did do it.
Of all the things to love about him, his calmness in front of goal was the most demanding, absolutely beautiful to watch. He scored in ways normal players wouldn’t, he shot the ball with a venom that looking at him, you wouldn’t think he possessed.
There are players who see different aspects of the game differently from others, and I believe that this vision is something that one is born with; it is never taught.
Fabregas and Ozil may be creative players, but they achieve this creativity in different ways because they view the game in different ways.
People like Fabregas and Ozil, they come around quite often, albeit not always in the same calibre but the come around all the same. Enigmas like Eduardo rarely ever filter into our universe, the DNA combinations that gave him his special abilities border slightly on mutation and as such occur quite rarely.
He saw the goal differently from all of us. Where we see the keeper standing between us and goal, he saw a large expanse of the goal, the keeper but a speck in his vision. Then he calmly elevated himself into a higher level of being, one that wasn’t bound by time, tried all angles he could score from and then decided on the one that would make him seem the most human so that we humans would not feel sad.
Even when he missed goals, he did it out of love, he did it so we would still identify with his humanity.
It is my opinion that Arsene knew a bit about his special ability, he knew of what he was capable of and he encouraged him to do as he pleased.
The mutant was ours, the enigma was never going to be understood.
Or so we thought.
To this date, I consider his career as one of he saddest tragedies in football history. Never has there been a purer finisher than him. He could have taken us to great heights, GREAT HEIGHTS I tell you! But for the Universe’s eagerness to level the playing field, the Universe’s deceit.
You see, this rare combination of DNA bordering on mutation was also mystical. Eduardo’s abilities filtered into our universe from another, an alternate Universe made up of higher beings who wanted their lost powers back regardless of the consequences (regardless of if a human life was lost in the process).
They tried by putting the wielder in the midst of a scandal but Arsene the ever wise one knew of their plot and was well equipped to handle it, he protected Eduardo when that time came and guided him through a tough period. But the second time around, that’s when they got him, when Arsene could do nothing about it. That’s when it all came to an end.
The second paragraph of this post was the way it was intended by the fates, but these higher beings who would stop at nothing until they got their powers back cheated us and cheated the fates. This is how it happened
Clichy sends a perfectly weighted pass come from the left side of our half; just behind the half way line, Eduardo receives the ball in a universe sized amount of space, turns around and makes for the 18 yard box.
Martin Taylor sees the attacker in front of him, knows he is posing any danger at the moment but still can’t understand why he is running towards him….now he is sliding with his studs up, he tries to bring them down but they are out of his immediate control….CRACK!!! Eduardo is on the floor with his leg broken in two. He goes unconscious and tries to fight off the attack on his soul, tries to retain the powers.
I think this guy should never play football again, what is he doing on the football pitch?
Arsene Wenger was livid for he knew that the Universe had taken sides, something it should never do. The Enigma had been taken from us.
February 23rd 2008, the moment that changed history.
We still love you Eduardo, our Dudu, our Mutant, our Enigma, our LEGEND!
