Hello and welcome to the midweek.
The defeat on Sunday left me gutted, like really, really gutted and when you’re gutted motivation is hard to come by. It was hard reading any Arsenal news or checking up on anything Arsenal for that matter, but I write, I have to write and I have to think about the Arsenal.
The manner of the defeat was really a bother. I thought we had more spine, I thought we could finally end the Chelsea hoodoo. The last two years had been about chucking monkeys off backs. The trophyless monkey– chucked! The can’t win big games monkey– chucked! The Giroud can’t score in big games– chucked! So It was only natural that I wanted to see the can’t beat Chelsea monkey chucked, but it was not to be and we once again lost to Diego Costa and his odiousness.
But we can’t wallow, that in itself is another defeat and we can’t have that. We’ve been here before; flying high in the league then choking and losing it all. This feels quite familiar, but I refuse to accept it. Many don’t have faith in the team anymore and if that’s how they want to play it that’s their business. What I do know is that a squad that no one gave a chance after Alexis, Coquelin and Cazorla got injured ploughed through and got themselves to the top of the table.
Now we’ve suffered a blip, those players who did so well to get us here are showing the signs of fatigue– mental fatigue. They beat Man City, that was huge, so now they are tiring, but it’s okay because soon we’re going to have fresh blood.
Our next four games are: Southampton at home, Bournemouth away, Leicester at home and United away. They are all tough games, but when you factor in that we should have Alexis, Coquelin, Rosicky and Welbeck back for some or all of these games, then the picture begins to look less grim.
Look, we’re 3 points off the top and only 3rd due to goal difference. Leicester play Liverpool, City and then us in their next three games, so that’s a chance to leapfrog them and City have Tottenham and Leicester to play soon too. These people will drop points, we just have to capitalize and I know we can.
This is a time when the team needs leaders, people who can look at the games past and learn from it and not lose their heads for the games of the future. I feel we have them in players like Cech, Mertesacker and Koscielny. There are superstars who have won things in Alexis and Ozil, this team can do it, they have all won at least two trophies now and with a team that’s coming back to full fitness, I am quite optimistic for the future.
Our next game is an FA cup game and I think it’s a welcome distraction and a chance to blood some people into the team. It’ll bode well for our season if we can come through Saturday with the desired result both on the pitch and in terms of the fitness of our players.
Let’s keep fingers crossed. Till then.
