So it’s Thursday. We’re three days away from our second cup final in two years. We are all charged up and raring to go (the fans at least). I want to assume that the players are also up for it. I watched last year’s final again last night and i still got goosebumps as i watched us play. I felt the gut wrenchingness of the first two Hull goals (it was duller though) and the absolute joy of ours (that hasn’t faded).
So here’s how we line up last year:
I’d even forgotten that Podolski was in that squad. Looking at that team sheet i see we were devoid of pace. If i remember correctly Theo and the Ox were out injured and we didn’t have an Alexis or Welbeck. Well now we d and Arsene has an interesting job picking his team. Now if for a second i could guess and add a little of my opinion, here’s how i’d go:
GK- Ospina: The Colombian shot stopper wasn’t seen by many as the first choice at the beginning of the season, just some healthy competition for Szczesny, but here he is as our number one shot stopper this season. Many don’t feel he’s what we need for next season, but that can all come about in the summer. As for this final he gets my nod cos Szczesny didn’t play the last game and even with some dodgy moments against West Brom, i still think he’s the better fit at this point in time.
RB- Bellerin: The spanish right back has been one of the stories of the season. He has said he was on his way out before taking his opportunity and establishing himself as arguably our first choice right back. It would be interesting to see what happens with Debuchy next season Bellerin has duked it out against Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea already so i don’t think a cup final will faze him more than the others and on the other hand we really don’t have a choice do we as Debuchy isn’t properly match fit.
LB- Monreal: He might not have played the last two games and i think Gibbs is a good left back, but at the moment we all know who is winning the LB battle. Monreal has handed Gibbs’ ass to him. His attacking play has improved and on the defensive side i really think the time spent at CB helped out quite a lot.
CB- Koscielny: I watched him score our equalizing goal last night and i felt that current of electricity. He’s our best defender and it’s clear he’s banished the ghosts of 2011, so he has to play.
CB- Mertesacker: While not everyone’s favorite due to his lack of speed, but he is experienced, he’s been here before and while Aston Villa have really fast attackers it’s not like Mert hasn’t dealt with the like before. I throw my lot in with him.
CM- Coquelin: THE story of the season. 4-4-2 magazine has him in their team of the season (here). He has been awesome. Now i’d like someone to help him out in the summer but i surely want him in this team– on saturday and after.
CM- Santi: Now i had heard that he has played this role in Malaga before, but never in my wildest dreams did i think he’d do it to perfection as he has done in recent weeks. Sure he’s had bad days, like Swansea and Man United. But you remember Hull and Man City and you’re like “WOW” . He’s my man.
AM- Ozil: Come on! Who else was i gonna pick. It’ll be really cool if he wins trophies in his first two seasons with us
RW- Ramsey: I know, i know. This is definitely not his best position and he’s way better from the middle, but you also have to consider that he isn’t quite useless there either. His performances against Liverpool and Hull both in that position were phenomenal and when you consider that Villa have pace on the wings and that Bellerin will need cover, Ramsey is your guy. If the Ox was fit and firing or Welbeck i’d have gone for one of the two and maybe chucked Ramsey in the middle, but you know…it is what it is
LW- Alexis: I just love this guy, 24 goals and counting (hopefully. It’ll be nice if he scored a couple and rivaled Henry’s 26 goal first season in a cup final). I really can’t say much about him, just that he’s a match winner and you can’t leave him out.
CF- Walcott: This was hard for me as i understand that his hat trick against West Brom was just one game and over the season Giroud has been pretty good. But here’s my thinking; Villa will attack– or at least try to and this will leave the space that Theo so thrives on and playing as a forward won’t make him such a defensive liability. Also, he’s the one with the confidence at the moment. I love Giroud, but it’s clear that he’s kinda lacking in confidence at the moment and a cup final is a scary time to gamble over that. I feel he’s a good option from the bench as he’s shown that in games where he’s been introduced from there (Reading and Everton come to mind). So for this, i’ll go with the speedstar.
So there you have it, that’s my team for the FA cup final. Agree? Disagree? Wanna comment about it? You can sound off in the comment box below.
But we all have something in common; we all want the team to win.
