Looking at the news today and there it was, Arteta has agreed to a one year deal and is set to lead Arsenal for another season.
Implication of that is very clear- no new midfielder is coming in. So you can start to quash all them Carvalho rumours, thoughts and dreams in your head.
The 33-year old Arteta who spent most of last season out through injury has finally agreed to the new contract that was placed before him months ago. The Spaniard could have returned to Spain but has declined to in favour of an extra year at the emirates.
Arsenal had earlier dropped their interest in Schneiderlin, who is set to join United after balking at his £25m valuation. We remain keen on the Frenchman but Southampton would have to drop that price substantially.
With Arteta confirmed to stay put, Coquelin’s emergence as Arsenal’s linchpin midfielder last season and Santi Cazorla’s switch to a central role, let’s not forget Jack Wilshere, Ramsey, Flamini, Rosicky, also permit me to include Crowley and Bielik in this list, all of whom are vying for roles in the engine room and knowing the kind of person Wenger is, I believe he doesn’t see the need for a new midfield enforcer anymore.
Complain as much as you like, Wenger’s a loyalist and having all those players at his disposal, we can be sure he isn’t signing any midfielder soon.
Sorry Carvalho, you can start unpacking your things now. lol
Meanwhile in the goalkeeping department, David Ospina has said he will hold talks with Wenger about his future before making a decision.
He said:
‘I have always had to fight for the title of positions at all my clubs. You expect a big club like Arsenal to improve the squad but you must always impress the manager in training.’
