As the final whistle went at the Emirates one would be forgiven for being a little disgruntled.
We had just drawn with Sunderland, on a purely logical level it’s fine because now we’re assured of qualifying for the champions league without the hassle of a qualifying round. So early August can be used to focus on getting that extra boost in the premier league and maybe we don’t have players getting so tired so quickly.
But the match was quite frustrating. It was different from the Swansea game because we showed a whole lot more intent in this game than in that one, but the stats make for dismal reading. We have 6 points from the possible 15 from the last 5 games, have scored only 4 goals in those 5 games and if you remove the Hull game (Where we were pretty good) you now have 1 goal in 4 games.
To my mind that speaks to a lack of something in attack. We really should have done better. Yesterday was a better showing in my opinion because while against Swansea our poor finishing and unimaginative attack play made Fabianski look better than he is, Pantilimon truly worked hard against us. We made him work and he was great for them.
So what’s missing?
It will be easy to say world class striker and while i love Giroud, i’m finding it harder and harder to defend him. I feel the term “World Class” is bandied around a bit too easily, but i feel we could do with another goal scorer, Arsene feels the same. He (Giroud) has now gone 7 games (All competitions) without a goal, the last coming against Liverpool. Now i know strikers go through poor periods, but for a team of Arsenal’s caliber you can’t afford such a drought. The truth is I felt everyone else gave their all, he on the other hand was off the mark. I wonder how this will affect Arsene’s summer plans as i don’t know if he’s ready to give up on Welbeck yet and to be fair the England international was out injured yesterday. It’ll be interesting to see how things go.
Giroud has had a great season especially when you take into consideration that he was out for almost the whole of the first half of the season, but his poor run has also coincided with our own indifferent form. He scored against Liverpool which barring the Hull city is the only game we’ve scored more than one goal and if we look further through our really good 10 game run it’s littered with Giroud goals and assists. That tells me he was pivotal to the run and now that’s he’s in a rut we’re not doing really well.
Make of that what you will, but it tells me it might be something we want to look at. We are surely out of the race for second, but we’re basically third so it’s not all bad. The season is over for me and my real focus is now on the FA cup which we really must win.
Let’s hope for the best, if we win i’ll chalk this up as a relatively successful season
