On the 60th minute mark, our goalkeeper misreads a situation and comes rushing out like a trailer whose brakes have failed, the resulting outcome is a penalty conceded and a red card. Oh what a day for those on the new bandwagon that just arrived to Ashburton groove, more fuel for their imaginary fire. I am sat on the couch in my parlour thinking “oh sh*t, he had to choose today to do this?”
You see, I had decided on Monday that I was going to write a blog about our number 1, so you can only imagine how ironic that moment was. The conundrum now was – do I write a blog which is supposed to defend him after arguably his worst game this season, or do I hold off on it until he has a blinder of a performance?
As you can already guess, the answer was a resounding NO! If I was going to defend someone, I’d better do it when they needed it.
Twittersphere was already rife with people wanting Woj benched just so they can have their hunger for change satisfied. Some went as far as saying our No. 1, has been awful for most of the season, his concentration is always wavering during games, his distribution is too poor, his face distracts our defenders during set pieces, he chills too much when he has nothing to do on the pitch, his hair is not as black as Ospina’s, he doesn’t have an easy enough name to spell nor pronounce (to this I agree) etc.
Szczesny sent off for a rash challenge, with Arsenal leading 4-0. Yep.

Oh Szczesny. Just no need. Let him go. Let him score. Sigh.

No player has been sent off more times in the Champions League over the last 3 seasons than Wojciech Szczesny (2). pic.twitter.com/eXE303lqNB

Amazing the Wojciech Szczesny has been sent off more in UCL than Pepe and Sergio Ramos in past three years.

You can’t even script that. To say I am surprised at this is a bit of an understatement. How do these people think? (Albeit I just invented some of the above complaints before the ones off twitter. Bite me!) But back to the more important topic of how some of our moaning fans think, I saw a conversation between two of them on twitter and it went a little like this:
Moaner 1: Hmmm…Ozil is beginning to play well eh?
Moaner 2: yeah…but it seems to me that Szcz has been shit
Moaner 1: YEEEEAAAHHHH… HE HAS.
Like, can you believe this? (of course you don’t, you shouldn’t because I just invented that conversation too). I seem to be getting quite good at this fiction thing eh? I’ll try writing a Fantasy Sci-Fi novel, that would be rad.
Jokes aside, back to the important topic of Wojciech’s defense.
Did Woj make a wrong judgment call?
Does that make him shit?
Eat your hat!
I don’t seem to remember him letting in goals which a decent keeper could have kept out. But CLEARLY, I am the only one watching who doesn’t have a ‘BENCH HIM’ agenda writhing at the back of my head! * Be calm Gillian, be calm*
I think he is a good protector of our net and I hope our fans -nor the minority of them anyways- would lay off of him. It’s not our place to always criticize the players, Arsene will do that if he deems it necessary. We should always support them, that’s why we are called supporters. It’s never good for confidence when your own fans decide to rip you.
I rest my case.
How good were we on Wednesday eh?
I remembered saying in a previous post that I would love to see us line up as we did on Wednesday, albeit just the front 4 of Alexis, Welbeck, Theo/Ox and Ozil behind them. It was a joy to watch to be honest. I’m not exactly sure how that would fare against a team which decides to sit deep, unless the gaffer decides t’give it another go against the Chelsea this weekend.
Oh, and CHAMBERS is such a boss! Too good. He is almost like a Koscielny Mertasacker hybrid. DAMN!
Have a nice weekend folks.
